The CPIV team is excited to welcome Alida van Wyk to our team. Alida is qualified Speech- Language and Hearing Therapist. She has hit the ground running and we value the expertise and skill that she brings to our team and the PE Community. But let me allow Alida to introduce herself to you:
Upon completing my degree in speech therapy, I said goodbye to the green streets of Stellenbosch, ready to explore the golden landscapes of the Eastern Free State. My community service year behind me; I looked forward to the uncharted waters of the education sector. I joined the multidisciplinary team at Tswellang Special School in Bloemfontein, where children with both physical and intellectual barriers to learning receive a mainstream education. My roots however, were still growing amongst the polar trees in Golden Gate, so I returned to Bethlehem to build my own practice in January of 2014. The practice soon branched out to the surrounding communities of Ficksburg, Qwa Qwa, Senekal, Kroonstad and Harrismith.
In 2015 I became a volunteer at Sound for Silence; an NGO focusing on the identification and treatment of children living with hearing impairment in the rural parts of the Eastern Free State. I was captivated by this unique population and the field of Auditory Verbal Therapy, which led me to complete my postgraduate LSLS SA (Listening and Spoken Language Skills South Africa) certificate through Stellenbosch University. As 2019 neared its end, the wind blew me to the shores of Port Elizabeth and its friendly people. 2020 therefor represents a year of growth and sprouting new roots as I commence my pursuit of a Master’s degree focusing on premature infants.
I am privileged to become a part of the well-oiled machine that is the Centre for Play and Innovation. I look forward to learning from them whilst walking alongside them. I believe that we are all called to serve. Being part of a child’s journey of discovering the power of his own voice sparks incomparable joy for me. My vision is simple; create a space where our energy and passion changes the lives of individuals (children and adults) as well as families, fueled by sustained personal growth and innovative service delivery.
